Choosing the Correct EDM Electrode Material

If you are trying to improve the shop floor performance of your EDM, one of the best ways to do so is to choose the right graphite grade. The correct grade will allow you to produce the surface finish that you need. It can also help you achieve a better machinability and melting point.

Graphite is the most commonly used electrode material. However, it is not the only type of material. Brass wire and copper are other common materials for EDM.

Although the choice of EDM electrode material can impact the overall performance of an EDM, the process itself is relatively unaffected by the material. As long as the material has a high melting point, it will retain its shape and machinability.

Depending on the application, electrodes can be made from several different pieces of the same quality material. This can be more economical than purchasing separate pieces of material. To find the most cost-effective grade, you will need to do some testing.

For EDM applications that require a thin rib, a high-performance grade is often the most effective. Fine-grained graphite can provide the desired surface finish. In addition, it will eliminate waste caused by slow machine speeds.

A graphite electrode can have on-times of less than 1%. This can help prevent the need for electrode redressing. On the other hand, copper electrodes tend to wear faster.

When selecting the correct graphite grade, you should consider the following:

Graphite is a soft, non-metallic material that has an effective lubricant and is corrosion resistant. Because of its properties, it is an excellent material for die-sinking EDM.
